Placement for CSE (Bioinformatics) is not that good at VIT for the core companies. Generally, most of the software and IT companies allow CSE (Bioinformatics) students to sit for placement and many people ultimately get into IT sector. But then what is the point behind taking Bioinformatics. Generally speaking, bioinformatics is mostly a research based field so core jobs are related to research and companies don't think that some graduate with some knowledge of bioinformatics can do some fruitful research. But placement in terms of percent is pretty decent. Almost all students will get placed generally in IT companies. The highest package offered was around 8 lacs by Agilent. There may have been a few others who offered around 4-5. Mostly were 3.5 or below though, and most BioInfo / BioTech students got placed in IT companies like CTS, Wipro and Accenture.

Earlier, bioinformatics used to be a separate branch in itself at VIT, but to prevent isolation of the branch VIT merged bioinformatics with CSE so as to enable Bioinformatics students to land a job in software companies as well which has uplifted placements in bioinformatics by leaps and bounds. This year VIT witnessed 85% placement of the whole batch of computer science specialising in bioinformatics within the first 4 months of the placement drive. If placement is why you want to join bioinformatics then be assured that you are going to land up with the job of about 4 to 5 lacs. The highest placement for computer science department, that including all the specialisation groups, was around 35 lacs. Majority of the students went up abroad for completing the MS / M.Tech giving them much more probability to land up in a core bioinformatics company. The only disadvantage in being in this branches there's more chance to land up in IT companies like Infosys, TCS, Wipro, Accenture as there are only a few core companies visiting the campus. I hope this answers your question.
