School of Energy Science & Engineering (SESE) was started in 2013 as an interdisciplinary program at IIT-Kharagpur. This school provides critical research inputs in all areas of energy sectors as well as innovative technologies for energy systems. This department manages and supports research activities with multidisciplinary inputs from several departments/centers such as Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Agriculture and Food Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Metallurgical & Materials Engineering, Materials Science, etc. Apart from research activities, it also invites a number of recruiters. The placements are not that good in core sector and often people end up working in a software or IT firm. But that is not a minus point. About 71% people get placed and the average package is about 6 lacs per annum. It is a fact that this is not as high paying as the core branches but if you interested, money is not a problem. I hope this helps you in making your decision.

IIT, Kharagpur being among top 5 engineering colleges in India, is the place which can ensure you best of the placements in India. Now regarding your question, just a B.Tech or an undergraduate course in energy engineering is not going to fetch you a placement package of above Rs 6 lakhs and not even any core company unless you have a very impressive profile. What you need to do now is to do M.Tech in the same energy engineering branch in the same college or one of your choice which is going to ensure placement in a core company and a placement package of not less than Rs 20 lakhs. This is because not many students pursue energy engineering lately in India and all the core energy engineering companies are looking for M.Tech students at a minimum. The highest placement for energy engineering for M.Tech student at IIT Kharagpur was Rs 29 lakhs. Also if you consider doing your masters from abroad, there are a lot many opportunities in comparison to India for an energy engineering M.Tech student. Hope this helps.

Energy engineering is nowadays getting popular due to its wide application in energy resources and plants. Though the branch contains one of the most precise information and great concerns to deal with the energy resources present in the earth. When it comes to placements it is around Rs 10 lakhs average and one can achieve an average placement very easily. When it comes to the highest package it is around Rs 22 lakhs to Rs 25 lakhs which is not exceptional but rare as obvious for a non-core stream. Apart from the placements, the culture and the academic system is so well planned that enables the students to shape themselves and achieving heights in the corporate world. Hard work is must in the respective stream because it is now a competitive era and a lot of field work knowledge and a bit corporate experience is must to excel in the branch and in the placement sessions. Hope it will be helpful!
