Established in 1994, the campus has the best in class infrastructure and amazing cutting-edge amenities for developing practical skills. It also arranges industrial visits and foreign immersion programme for mechanical branch. Mechanical engineering at IIT Guwahati is very decent. For mechanical engineering, for 2016 out of 68 students who applied to placements, 64 students have been placed meaning almost 100 % placement for mechanical which is mouth hogging. The median salary was around 9 LPA but the average salary was around 7 LPA and the maximum salary was around 22 LPA. Above figures are as per audited reports and all these figures suggest excellent placements at IIT Guwahati for the Mechanical branch. As we all know, IIT Guwahati is one of the best engineering colleges in India. Established in 1994, IIT Guwahati has since then grown into being a preferred destination for people passionate about learning and innovation. It has several factors, that have contributed to its development as one of the best institutes in the country in a short span of time. The department of mechanical engineering there established in 1995, has been recognized the world over for excellence in research and academics. This makes it obvious for the best recruiters to visit the campus. To give an idea, here are a few names- Absolute Data, Embibe, Impetus, Power Alstom, Energo, Induslogic, PWC, Altair, Evalueserve, Infosys, Qwest Telecom, Ashok Leyland, EXL Service, Ingersoll Rand, RIL, Bosch, Fluent, ITC, Capgemini, I Fluidyn, L & T, Tata Motors etc. Apart from these PSUs like BHEL, SAIL, and IOCL also recruit from IIT Guwahati. Around 74% students get placed every year and the average package is about 12 lacs per annum. The highest package in core sector can reach up to 40 lacs per annum.

The placements in the IIT, Guwahati for mechanical varies from Rs 5 lakhs to Rs 25 lakhs per annum. Though the above stats may vary from different to different corporates which can be distinguished as global and domestic. Apart from placement, IIT Guwahati serves well in the respective field but still needs to improve its scope and efficiency in comparison to other IITs. Although there is no compromise with the quality of students as all are JEE Advance cleared and among the best minds of the country but the mechanical culture is not much executed as in the IIT, Kharagpur. The work experience, the practical knowledge, the on field skills and the thorough branch knowledge is the most prominent part of the learning of a mechanical engineer where IIT, Guwahati and all IITs are working effortlessly to get their students to the top. So all IITs are the best but still, your efforts are the most prominent. Hope it helped.

IIT, Guwahati has a dedicated training and placement cell which manages to invite and attract a large number of companies mostly IT companies but that is seen in every engineering college these days. Few companies that make rounds during the placement season at IIT Guwahati are:- BeeHyv Software Solutions Pvt.Ltd, CA Technologies, Citrix Credit, Suisse Business Analytics, EIL, EMC Data System Private Limited, Futures First, Grail Research, Headstrong India, Qualcomm India Pvt. Ltd., RIL, Schlumberger, SourceBits, Tejas Networks, Airvana Networks India, Fair Issac, Irunway, LMS Emmeskay Solutions Pvt. Ltd. With an undergraduate program from IIT, Guwahati in mechanical engineering one can expect an average package of Rs 8 lakhs and above but this does not ensure placement into core mechanical company. One needs to complete his master's program like many other IIT students for getting into core mechanical companies and having a placement package of not less than Rs 20 lakhs. Hope this helps.
