To become a Commercial Pilot, you need to clear the Aviation specific exams conducted by the DGCA, the Radio Telephony exam conducted by the Ministry of Communications & be classified as FIT in the Class-I Medical Exam, which will be conducted at specified institutes in the country. You will also need to fly & log the minimum number of flying hours on the type that you're going to look for employment in the future. With all this under your belt, and the particular aircraft type endorsed on your flying license, start applying for a job in different companies. For details, you may visit the DGCA website.

There are currently two main ways to become a Commercial Pilot in India, one is by joining one of the several flying schools already available in India or abroad, and the other is via the Cadet Pilot programme with an Airline. For prerequisites, a candidate needs to clear 10+2 with Maths and Physics with a Recognized board. He would also need to clear DGCA based Class two and Class one medical tests. Once that is done, he can either join any flying school or give an entrance test for a Cadet Pilot Program. Currently, Jet Airways and Indigo Airlines are the only two airlines that offer a Self-Sponsored Cadet Pilot Programme in India. To get through these, one has to give a written exam based on Maths and Physics, followed by a round of CASS (Crew assessment and Selection System) and Group Discussion. Once a candidate clears all the rounds, he is given a choice to Join a partnered flying school either in India or abroad and get a CPL licence in the next two years. Once the candidate gets his CPL, he is then sent to get Type Rated on the type of Aircraft the respective airline operates. This entire programme can cost anywhere between INR 85 lakhs to INR 1.2 crores. This approach is beneficial for aspirants who are looking to become an Airline Pilot. The other approach one can take is join any flying club in India or abroad and Get a Commercial Pilot's Licence. Schools like Ambitions Flying Club and Bombay Flying club charge around INR 25 lakhs for the course and there are other schools like CAE Gondia where the costs can go up to INR 35 lakhs. Once the candidate gets his CPL, he can either choose to join an airline by giving the respective airline's entrance exams or he can get an Instructor's rating and work as an Instructor. Getting into a Private Airline in India would again cost anywhere between INR 25 lakhs to INR 40 Lakhs on top of the course fees of getting a CPL. This costs are to get Type rated on the Type of aircrafts the airlines operate. An airline pilot in India starts working as a Junior First officer and his/her slaary would range anywhere from 1.5 Lakhs to 3 lakh INR per month and it goes up to 8 lakh INR once the pilot gets upgraded to the post of a Captain. A check and training captain or a pilot working in the Middle East could earn evern more. This is a very high paying job but it also has a huge responsibility attached to it and can be considered a high stress job.
