Tour guides provide an in-depth knowledge about destinations frequented by tourists, vacationers and students. Tour guides are generally trained on-the-job. A job as a travel guide entails enabling visitors to experience a specific or several specific local activities to the fullest. Travel guides may be hired at a particular tourist destination, or be hired through a travel agency. Travel guides generally spend an entire day, or even more, with a group of tourists, taking them to various landmark spots in a particular area. Tour guides, on the other hand, normally specialize in giving tours of one particular tourist destination. There is no prerequisite to become a tour guide. There is no minimum or maximum age limit for the profession. It is preferred that tour guide be a graduate in any discipline, preferably art, archaeology, history and culture. Ministry of Tourism provides licenses to the tourist guides and also organizes Regional Level Tourist Guide Training Programmes. Many of the states in India have made registration of tourist guides mandatory. The tourism department holds examination which consists heavily of general knowledge, history and culture, etc. The candidate should possess good linguistic skills especially verbal along with a pleasing personality. In India, a tour guide can start with a salary of Rs 2 LPA. Most of the tour guides operator as an individual consultant.
