An art director is a person who oversees the art in a newspaper, magazine, tabloids, book covers or any other publication in terms of photography, graphics, images etc. He/she works with the design department to coordinate how images will match up with the words. If you are looking to make your career as an art director in a publication house or even in an advertising agency, you need to have a degree in arts as drawing, graphic design and photography are the essential components to be learned. There are art directors in production houses as well but the nature of responsibilities change when you work for an electronic media production. The major responsibilities entail selecting a location for shoot and coordinating with the cinematographer, film makers, costume designers to create a required set for shooting and give it a realistic feel. An art director supervises the entire decoration of the sets and looks after the improvements wherever required. To become an art director in a production house, one should pursue a specialised course in art direction and film making after completing a Bachelors in fine arts. Many film making institutes like FTII Pune, Satyajit Ray Fim and Television Institute, Whistling Woods International offer a specialised course in direction/art direction. As a beginner in the industry, you can expect a starting salary from 3 Lacs per annum which will grow gradually with your experience.
