Both the subjects have scope in research but maths has less competition.

Hey, If you want to become a scientist and like physics, you should go for pure science rather than engineering, join any research institute like IISER, IISC, etc., or prefer B.Sc as I'm in the same field. In engineering, you will study about machines and stuff, but if you take Physics, you can study string theory, astrophysics, particle physics, blackhole, etc.
