The number one skill you need to become an automobile designer is the ability to draw from your shoulder. Yes, I know it sounds strange, but I will explain. If you have looked at professional car design sketches on line you have noticed that the difference between them and the amateur ones you see, say on Facebook, is that the pro sketches have a certain flow and energy to the line work. The ability to draw cars this way comes from about 10,000 hours of practice of drawing from your shoulder. Seriously, Drawing cars is extremely hard. Drawing cars well is harder still. If you want to be an automobile designer, you have to learn the drawing techniques that professional automobile designers use. It is that simple. Pragmatically, you have to be able to draw an ellipse in one motion. You have to understand and be able to draw in perspective. You have to understand the proportion of vehicles and create sketches accordingly. For example, a micro city electric car has a different wheel / body relationship than a big SVU. Your sketches need to reflect this. In addition, you have to be able to work in lots of different media from the basic pencil and pen on a napkin kind of stuff, to full on maker and digital rendering. Each aspect has to be mastered, if you want to be a professional car designer. All major and minor automotive design programs at the collegiate level will give you the platform to gain these skills. But, you have to get accepted. And to do that, you need a killer portfolio. The more advanced your drawing skills are when you are preparing your portfolio, the better chance you will get in to a top school. Moreover, if you want to apply for a scholarship, the better your portfolio, the better your chances of getting a free or partially free ride.
