It depends on in which country you are applying. In some countries, like Singapore it is recommended not compulsory. If you can speak English fluently, then you have no need to take it.

I have come across many students like you asking me the same question or even to an extent that will English HL in IB help them in getting a waiver from the university. Yes, it's true that at times universities do waive off the IELTS requirement if the student has consistently performed well in the English subject at school. However, you should keep in mind that IELTS scorecard is an important document in the visa file, and even if the university has waived off the IELTS requirement for you, the visa officer may require to see it. So, its always advisable to be on the safer side and take the IELTS test. IELTS is an English language exam that assesses students to measure their English language proficiency (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking). This test is to be given by all students applying to international universities as India is a non-English speaking country. I recommend students to appear for the test during the summer break after completing class 11th or in the beginning of her class 12th. This will be the ideal time to take the test. The test scores are valid only for two years and by the time you get offers from the universities these scores will be valid and you will not require to retake the test. To prepare, you can plan to join a coaching center for a crash course before you take the test or a 1-month self-preparation will be sufficient if you have a good command over the language in school.
