Yes, these two goes hand in hand. I myself is an engineer, and now I am pursuing MBA from Doon Business School, Dehradun. I like market research a lot. Software like SPSS must be learnt prior to get a good hold over Market research.

Yes, market research is a good field. Corporate do need extensive information about competitors and current market conditions. Market research tools are easy to Master for engineers. Yes, it is a good idea. You have two skills one is engineering and other one is marketing then. And opportunity of getting job and setup the business will became high.
