Devoting one full year for JEE preparation has its own merits and demerits. Dropping a year means that you will get sufficient amount of time to prepare for JEE and other engineering competitive exams. It will allow you take mock up test and help to score good ranking in competitive exams. However, one year is a long time so the possibility of you may change your goals and objectives. You may become lethargic because of availability of time and lesser pressure. You may waste time. If you are confident of keeping the momentum, dedication, determination, readiness to work on a plan, will to achieve your objective and support of family; you may consider dropping a year for competitive exams. It is worth try option.

If you are not getting even tier 3 colleges and determined enough to crack JEE Advanced next year than I will suggest you to drop a year. But you should never repeat the mistakes which you did last year. Start a fresh preparation and make a list of important topics. Categorise them into 3 sub categories: 1. Strong Topics: You can place topics in which you are confident enough to solve even the toughest questions. Just go through these topics as quickly as possible. 2. Average topics: Work on these topics and convert these topics into stronger one. Solve quality questions. 3. Weak topics: You have to work very very hard on these topics.Leave the less important topics and solve as many questions as you can. It's better to wake up early rather than being a night owl. Take enough sleep and eat healthy food. Chemistry may be your deciding factor. So NCERT must be on your tongue. Stay away from all disturbing elements like social media, relatives and friends as well. Always remember that 'you can and you will'.

As already pointed out by my fellow students taking a drop has its own merits and demerits. But before starting I would like to mention that whenever I would be referring to 'average college' it would be in regards with tier 1 government colleges which are among top 3 among their respective states. So let's take the example of my own two friends who took a drop, one of them was getting a tier one college in Maharashtra in the first attempt but he rejected that offer and took a drop year. He got into one of newer IITs (one of which almost no one has ever heard about). In this case, I would say it was a waste of one year. He should have gone to the average college as packages of that college are comparable to the new IITs. Another of my friend was in the same situation and he took admission in the average college and is doing pretty well in academics and I can bet he will land 8-10 LPA package for sure. Another example is one of my friends who took a drop and got into one of the old IITs but for that, he worked really hard. Every day he would study for a minimum of 8 hours for a year and his efforts paid off. So, in conclusion, if you are sure that you will give your hundred percent and won't slack off during the preparation go for the drop year. If you aren't sure then join the average college. But in any case don't join any college other than IITs, NITs, BITS and other tier 1 colleges. You would be wasting your four years. Consider doing something different than engineering if you are not getting tier 1 colleges. But if badly want to do Engineering then join a top tier 2 college and work extremely hard and be top of your class in B.Tech.

Both of these options have got their own pros and cons. One of my friends had taken a drop after his 12th. I would like to share his experience. He was so enthusiastic in the month of June and July, that he used to study for more than 10 hours a day. But as months went on passing, his enthusiasm, energy, determination also went on decreasing. On the other hand, one of my friends took admission in that year itself in an average, local college and now got a placement with a very good package. Take a drop only if you are determined and pretty adamant regarding your studies. It will be fruitful only then!
