Is it necessary to do B.Tech to become a Programmer? Which branches would be ideal for me?

Not necessary. You can become a "programmer" just by taking online courses and learning on your own. But a B.Tech helps you in a lot of ways.Firstly, you learn in a much more organized fashion than you would learn on your own. Secondly, you will have a degree that assures that you have some knowledge in that field. Finally, a degree from good college would increase your employ-ability and give you a chance to work for tech giants like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Facebook, etc. You should go for a B.Tech in computer science engineering. You can also have a look at information technology to see if it interests you. But computer science will be better for becoming a programmer in general. Aim for top colleges including but not limited to IITs, NITs and BITS. Being from NIT, Trichy I would like to share some stats with you. In 2017, hundred percent students from CSE branch were placed. Companies that visited our campus for placements included big names like Amazon, Microsoft, Yahoo, Google and Facebook. So research properly and make a well informed decision.

To become a programmer, you could take up a BE/B.Tech in information science/ IT. These are the best possible options in India. All the best!
