To appear for CAT exam is not necessary. Though, all the IIMs and some of the top non-IIMs do consider its score. Anyways, there are exams like SNAP, NMAT, XAT, TISSNET, IIFT, etc. which are institute specific. There are other exams as well and some are conducted by MBA institutes. But, CAT score is accepted by almost all the colleges. Hence, it is beneficial to write CAT exam with full preparation.
