There are many well-paid positions out there that might seem very handsome at the time. It is hard to maintain your rich lifestyle on a student loan, but you have to be honest with yourself; are you pursuing this role because it is genuinely something you are excited about or simply because it pays well? At this moment in time, a high salary might seem interesting but because you are pursuing this specific role you are automatically losing all the other roles that you might be more adapted for and ones that might be more profitable to you and could improve your skill set. You will have time to make money, now take this opportunity to develop your skills and most importantly find your own path as that would allow you to lead a career that you will truly enjoy. In my opinion, the method to choose the right set of companies is by your interest and motivation rather than external factors such as money.

Many colleges maintain this criteria just to give a fair opportunity to all the students. So that everyone can be placed. Another reason is that there is always remain a chance of rejecting the companies which effects the college reputation to the recruiters. So most of the colleges follow this criteria. Now from a student's point of view it really becomes hard and hectic to choose the companies. I would advise you first to list down the companies you would like to be placed. Then have a talk with placement cell, ask for the job roles offered, most preferred date of interview, city where you will be placed, package you will be offered and any other facilities to be provided or not and then with the seniors. Take their reviews and feedback and ask how this it working there. Ask them to share their experiences. After you are done with the whole process rank your preference and appear for the interview.
