Information Technology Infrastructure Library is the preeminent framework for managing IT service delivery around the world. ITIL defines a service lifecycle model that prescribes specific processes and activities during the design, development, delivery and support of IT services. For the purposes of this discussion, IT services are any IT activities that deliver business value to a company's end users and customers. Examples of IT services include centralized corporate email and corporate websites based on back-end IT processes, such as server and network administration. ITIL offers five different certification levels: Foundation Practitioner Intermediate (Service Lifecycle and Service Capability categories) Expert Master ITIL uses a credit system for the Foundation through Expert levels, in which each certification earns a certain number of credits. Ultimately, a total of 22 credits is required to achieve ITIL Expert certification. It is worth to pursue ITIL course - 1. If on-site sponsorship opportunities aren't available to you, it's still well worth the investment to pursue ITIL v3 certification on your own time. 2. Achieving an ITIL certification at any of the more advanced levels will give you a demonstrable advantage over other candidates in a job hiring scenario. 3. Becoming ITIL certified is a safe bet to stay prepared for the future, and the demand for educated ITIL experts in the fields of incident management, service management, change management and other ITSM related areas are still very high in the industry.

The Foundation level is the entry-level certification which offers you a general awareness of the key elements, concepts, and terminology used in the ITIL service lifecycle, including the links between lifecycle stages, the processes used and their contribution to service management practices. The quickest way to check if the ITIL Foundation will provide any value for you is to check the job listings for the types of role that you ideally want to work in. As you've seen, it's not a big deal for a company to teach you ITIL, but going into an interview with the certification already on your CV might give you the edge over another candidate. The Foundation certificate can be achieved at a fairly low cost (check the other threads on the forum for some good advice about books and training) so it could well be a worthwhile investment for you. Many big companies use ITIL at every level of their IT department, so showing you're familiar with how it works can definitely be a benefit.
