The HSEE has two parts: A MCQ (multiple choice questions) paper which tests the following: Economics World Affairs (famous treaties, events like 9/11, Cuban missile crisis, etc.) English Mathematics (class 10 level) Sociology, Political Science (NCERT Level) Environmental Studies (class 10, 11, 12 Geography) An Essay (you have choice between a range of topics) Now to deal with the first part of the paper the following study materials will be very beneficial: NCERT Social Sciences Textbooks of classes 11 and 12 [political science, sociology] (can be downloaded free of cost in pdf format from

) NCERT Economics textbook of classes 11th and 12th. Previous years papers are a must do, to become familiar with the pattern (HSEE-2016) Practice writing essays from the topics given in the previous year papers, proofread them and give them to your friends and neighbors for validation. If you are a science student, do not worry, you can easily grasp the concepts and ace the exam (I was one too), please concentrate on essay writing and reading the NCERT books mentioned above. Miscellaneous: There will be a virtual calculator. There is no negative marking, so please do go ahead and attempt.

Since IIT is a technical institution, the emphasis and quality of HSEE is relatively lesser compared to the technical fields. However, the quality is still better than most institutes in the country. There aren't much common mistakes but some preferred strategies to prepare for the same. Assuming you are studying maths, you're at an advantage with the Analytical and Quantitative Reasoning section. Download the previous years' papers and try to solve them. The part causing the nerves is the essay so practise (time-bound) as much as you can. Being a quizzer made the Indian Society and Culture, and World Affairs parts easy for me (I took the HSEE-2015; awaiting results), so you better stay updated on the current happenings.I had studied computer science and not economics, but that too posed hardly any issue.

In this exam, it is very likely that students commit the mistakes because of lack of proper knowledge and absence of right guidance by the mentor. Actually, IIT-HSEE is really quite simple exam to clear but for only those who have done their preparation seriously. First, know about its format. It consists of two section. In section 1, you have to face some objective type question (of Maths, Sociology, Geography, Economics, English, General Awareness etc.) and in Section 2, you have to write an essay on the mentioned subject. Now come on to your question. The best way to ensure that one perform well; Honest preparation with Time Management. This is the only key to success. It is very notable thing that there is no marks deduction for wrong answer. Hence, if you don't know the right answer, then you may take a chance. There are suggested books are available in market. For English and Comprehension Skill you can buy RS Aggrawal. For Analytical and Quantitative Ability, RS Aggrawal Quantitative Aptitude is the best. For General Studies, newspaper and internet is the beat source. Hope this helps. Best of luck.
