Indian Air Force has multiple career opportunities in both technical and non-technical branches. As an officer in the Indian Air Force, you strategize, lead and manage. One can join the Indian Air Force as an officer in the flying, technical or the ground duty branches depending on his/her educational qualification. Details as follows: (a) Flying Branch: Recruitment to flying branch is by NDA and CDS examination conducted by UPSCIAF also hires pilot through AFCAT examination. . NDA examination is after 10+2 in Science stream with age between 16.5 to 19 years. CDS and AFCAT requires graduation degree in Science. Age requirement is from 19 to 24 years. (b) Technical Branch: Selection is based though AFCAT and University Entry Scheme. Mechanical, Electronics, Electrical etc engineering graduates are eligible for seeking job in IAF Technical branch. Age limit is 24 years (c) Ground Duty Branch: It consist of Administration, Accounts, Logistics, Education, Meteorology etc. Selection is based on AFCAT. The candidates have to be 20 to 24 year old In addition, depending on educational qualification, one can join the Air Force in the Technical Trades or Non-Technical Trades as an airman. The positions are available for people having qualification viz. matriculation or below, intermediate, Diploma, graduate and post-graduate. Educational requirement varies for each trade. Majority of jobs have age requirement from 16 years to 20 years.

The Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) is conducted by Indian Air Force for selection in various branches. The branches are – Flying Branch Technical Branch Ground Duty branch Flying branch – Educational qualifications - Graduation in any discipline with min 60% marks and have cleared maths and physics as subject at 10+2 level or B.E/ B.Tech from a recognized University with min 60% marks. Age Limit 20 to 24 years Height 162.5 cms with correlated weight Technical Branch – Educational Qualification – Four year degree qualification and have cleared Sections A and B examination of Associate Membership of Institution of Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India with 60% marks. Age limit – 20 to 26 years Height men - 157.5 Women - 152 cm Ground Duty branch – Educational Qualification: Graduate degree (Min 3 years) in any discipline with min 60% marks or equivalent or cleared section A & B examination of Associate Membership of Institution of Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India with a min of 60% marks or equivalent. B.Com (Min 3 years) with min 60% marks for accounts posts. MBA/ MCA/ M.Sc or post-graduation in any discipline. Age limit - 20 to 26 years Height - 157.5 cm for men, 152 cm for women The AFCAT Exam Process – Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) and Engineering Knowledge Test (EKT - only for Technical branch). AFSB Interview Screening test Psychological test, group test, medical test and interview CPSS (Computerized Pilot Selection System) and/ or PABT only for Flying branch

Opportunities to join Indian Airforce – 1. NDA Exam- Aspirants who have just passed the 12th class, or are appearing in 12th class and have their ages in the range of 16 -19 years can apply for NDA examination. 2. CDS - Combined Defence Services is the entry that gives you the opportunity to join Indian Air force Academy after graduation. The age group as mentioned is 20-24 years and candidates having maths and physics in 12th class can apply for it. 3. AFCAT - AFCAT provides a gateway to GDOC, flying branch, technical field. The age limit for flying branch is 20-24 years while candidates having a commercial pilot license (CPL) issued by DGCA have an upper limit for applying for flying branch is 26 years. For ground duty and technical branch, it is 20-26 years. 4. University Entry Scheme is another entry for air force aspirants which are looking for the technical branch. The age limit for UES is 20-26 years and B.Tech or B.E student appearing in the pre-final year are eligible for this entry.

You may appear for the NDA examination after completing class 12th. Once selected, opt for Air Force. You will be sent for a PABT (Pilot Aptitude Basic Test) at an Air Force establishment. You must pass this as you'll never get another attempt to clear this in life. After this, you'll undergo a comprehensive medical checkup which also you must clear. You can also choose to join the Air Force after your graduation. The PABT & medical requirements will remain the same.
