As per the UGC regulations, an assistant professor/ lecturer, must holds a PhD degree, will be promoted to the Associate Professor post after the completion of about 12 years of service. Or, candidates who are working with a M.Phil degree or a PG degree in a professional course will be then moved to the Associate Professor post after the completion of 13 years of service.

There are only three designations in respect of teachers in universities and colleges, namely, Assistant Professors, Associate Professors and Professors. After VII pay commission, following are the career path of teachers in universities and colleges: (a) Assistant Professor (at Academic Level 10 with rationalized entry pay of Rs.57, 7001) (b) Assistant Professor (at Academic Level 11 with rationalized entry pay of Rs.68, 9001) (c) Assistant Professor (at Academic Level 12 with rationalized entry pay of Rs.79, 800/-) (d) Associate Professor (at Academic Level 13A with rationalized entry pay of Rs.1, 31,400/-) (e) Professor (at Academic Level 14 with rationalized entry pay of Rs.1, 44, 200/-) (f) Professor (at Academic Level 15 with rationalized entry pay of Rs.1, 82, 200/-) (g) Pro-Vice Chancellor: The pay of the Pro Vice Chancellor of a University is fixed at Academic Level 14 or Academic Level 15. (h) Vice Chancellor: The pay of the Vice Chancellor is fixed at Rs.2, 10,000/- (fixed). (I)The pay of Principals in Under Graduate and Post Graduate Colleges are as follows:a. Under Graduate Colleges: The pay of Principals is equivalent to the pay of Associate Professor I.e. Academic Level 13Ab. Post Graduate Colleges: The pay of Principals is equivalent to the pay of Professor I.e. at level Academic Level 14 .
