What is the difference between Grid and Cloud computing?

Cloud computing is a modern computing feature which provides flexible IT infrastructure and essential services to the users through the internet. Grid computing serves computing resources such as network, server, applications to the individual users. In Cloud computing, the resources are centrally managed whereas in grid computing resources are distributed where each site has its own administrative control. The applications build on the cloud are business specific applications such as web-based application, whereas, grid computing is for research based applications. Resources can be accommodated in a centralized or in a decentralized manner in cloud computing. On the other hand, resources are used in a decentralised manner in grid computing. In all, cloud computing provides real-time user-friendly services on a dedicated, high bandwidth internet connection and unlimited resources and Grids are heterogeneous, more loosely coupled and distributed to be better than traditional clusters.

Grid computing is a computational model that is also based on the network model. It provides the ability to perform higher throughput computing with the help of many networked computers. There is no precise definition to explain cloud computing. However, it is referred to as a model that provides an online network access to a shared pool of resources. Cloud computing is based on TCP/IP model and it is used to define a new class of computing that is based on network technology. Cloud computing takes place over the internet. It comprises of a collection of integrated and networked hardware, software and internet infrastructure.

It takes place over the internet. It comprises of a collection of integrated and networked hardware, software and internet infrastructures. These infrastructures are used to provide various services to the users. Grid computing is a computational model that is also based on the network model. It provides the ability to perform higher throughput computing with the help of many networked computers. It emerges in the form of virtual computer architecture. It mainly consists of two grids- Infrastructure and Applications Grid. Former consists of hardware resources like the processors, storage, and network. Later consists of packaged or custom applications that are employed in business logic.
