You can do self-study. The only requirement is determination and concentration. You need to practice the problems regularly. Instead of joining a coaching institute, you can opt for the test series conducted by coaching institutes on the weekly basis.

To prepare for CAT exam, one has to prepare for at least 6 months to 1 year depending on the individual capability and skills. The regular study for 1 year will help you in getting a good percentile.
