The scope of MBA is always encouraging. But healthcare management should only be done from top institutions not from anywhere you are able to find a place because, for a student having a general degree will be little tough to get placed if you don't select your college carefully.

MBA in Healthcare Management is a 2-year full-time post-graduate course, the eligibility of which is a Bachelor's Degree in any discipline with an aggregate score of 50% marks from a recognized university. Over a third of all health care managers worked for general medical and surgical hospitals in 2011, where average pay was $49.06 per hour or $102,040 per year. Over 9 percent worked as practice managers in doctors' offices to make an average $45.08 per hour or $93,770 per year. Healthcare as a sector in India is highly underpenetrated. But what is more interesting, is that most of the healthcare facility which is available in this country, is highly mismanaged. I think, in terms of scope, it may not really pick up in the next 5 years. Mostly doctors who own the facilities management it. But if I were the regulator or government, I would want the profession of medicine and the management of hospitals to be two different division. Healthcare being a basic need (should be a fundamental right between), I think it should not only be cost efficient but should also be highly professional and systematic. Coming back to MBA. Managing a hospital requires one to know the basics of operations of a hospital (I mean how a hospital or medical facility works and not the operation done by doctors). And if you already know that, I would recommend you to take up a General management degree ie. A basic PGDM or MBA. Then better find a job at the various multispecialty hospitals. Doing a dedicated course would not be advisable and wise.

With the concept of healthcare going beyond hospitals, the health care industry India has witnessed remarkable growth in the past few years. According to India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF,) the Indian health care sector, which consists of hospitals, medical devices and equipment and health insurance, is expected to reach US. $160 billion by 2017. Major factors driving this growth could be increasing demand of superior health care facilities, rising health awareness and health policies. The biggest challenge to make these figures come to reality is to create a skilled workforce which is equipped to deal with the issues pertaining to the healthcare industry. Besides doctors, nurses and other paramedical staff, the industry also requires qualified health care management professionals. This creates the need for specialized management course in health care. A Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Health Care can be the answer to this need.

As per the recent trends, MBA in healthcare management have bright future as the demand for such candidates is increasing. If you have B.A. Degree and have biology background it will help you in understanding the industry very well and will provide you edge over other non- biology background students. MBA in healthcare will lead you to work with the management of hospitals and clinics. It is better for you to do MBA in health care from a reputed institute, so that it will help you better job opportunities in your final year.
