The foremost skill for becoming a director is that one needs to be an excellent storyteller. You should be able to write stories and not in a way that is written for books. You should be able to write stories and able to replicate the story through the visual medium. This means that you should be able to visualise every aspect of your story. It also helps if you are familiar with production work and art direction. This helps you in the process of visualisation as you have a clear idea of how your film will look. A director primarily should have a basic understanding of all the aspects of filmmaking and should be a master in understanding the language of cinema.
