Skills that one should work upon to grab an internship in a public relations/marketing company are to be seen from two perspectives. As the question itself mentions the two- Public Relations and the other is Marketing. Marketing is made of promotions for sales. Whereas, Public Relations or PR is seen as liaisoning and connecting with the stakeholders which may not just be a marketing. There has always been a difference between PR and Marketing so I can not reply in one tone to the two questions. Let's take an Internship in Public Relations and treat the internship as a job prospect as well. PR is a skill which carries multiple aspects of Language Skills, Courtesy, Interpersonal Skills, Smartness in Communication, Problem Solving as well as Crisis Communication etc. Marketing, on the other hand, is focused more on generating sales of the product. One must be good at innovation in ideas and strategies development. One must be an outgoing person with excellent communication as persuasive skills. So, take communication skills, problem solving, crisis communication, interpersonal communication, leadership, negotiation skills and courtesy are to be seen as the essentials for a job or even internship in the field of Public Speaking/Marketing company.
