Scope of B.Scn in Nautical Science B.Sc. in Nautical Science is a 3-year long course that has been divided into 6 semesters, each lasting 6 months. After completion of the course, the candidate should undergo the 1-year long sea service. After the sea service and clearing the subsequent oral examination, the candidate could obtain the second mates foreign-going certificate of competency. This certificate will enable one to hold the post of Navigation Officer on Merchant Navy ships. Even after landing such a post, one could climb up the career ladder. After 18 months of sea service as a Navigation Officer, and clearing the written and oral examinations, one could obtain the first mates foreign-going certificate of competency. After 12 months of sea service as the Chief Mate and upon clearing the written as well as oral examinations, one could obtain the foreign-going certificate of competency. Scope of DNS: After completing Diploma in Nautical Science, one may become a training cadet. After gaining 18 months of sea service period, one may appear for 2nd Mate exam. After clearing it, one will be able to become 2nd Officer. After gaining further sea service period and appearing for further advanced tests, one may rise through ranks and become Chief Officer. With time, it is very much possible to become a Captain too. Starting salary is generally between 30-40k rupees per month. With each promotion, this figure will increase.
