Which has a better scope and why: Mechanical Engineering or Automobile Engineering?

Both engineering have their own significant values but as you can see there are only few private colleges which holds the degree of automobile engineering. So, its better to go with mechanical engineering as mechanical engineering provide many job opportunities nowadays in all private sector and public sectors. And if you were thinking about government jobs in PSU sectors then I suggest you to go with Mechanical Engineering as it has a scope for that.

If you are talking about India, I think we have large scope of automobile engineers. The automobile sector is getting bigger day by day as many foreign car brands starting there manufacturing plants in India. The companies which already have there plant are planning to expand. Companies like Hyundai are exporting their vehicles which are manufactured here. Luxury brands like BMW, Mercedes and Audi giving a great importance to our country. All these reasons will create great opportunities for automobile engineers in India.

Both are pretty good branches but you should know that Automobile is a sub-branch of mechanical. Mechanical Engineering has a lot of sub-branches and many good opportunities. It provides a variety of fields to work on. In mechanical, there are many sub-branches which have many jobs to offer: Aerospace Mechatronics Marine Metallurgy Production/Industrial Automobile As you can see automobile is one of them. I would generally suggest going for mechanical as it keeps a lot of doors open for you. If you select automobile, your field gets pretty limited and even if you want to do something different in future you have limited no of opportunities. So, in general, mechanical has a better scope as such, but if you are passionate about the automobile engineering and are sure that you want to pursue a career in the same then you can go for it too. Both the branches have decent placements and packages to offer. Just make sure you get into a good college as it will provide better job opportunities for you. All the best.

Mechanical Engineering is the Father branch of Automobile Engineering. Mechanical deals with the basics and core concepts that are used in almost every mechanical object but automobile deals with only subjects or courses that would help in making or studying an Automobile altogether. Basics are same such as Thermodynamics, Strength of material , theory of machines, heat transfer, Refrigeration, etc. but additional like automotive chassis, engine, dynamics, body engineering suspension, transmission are separate. Now coming to Scope: Coming to the job opportunities, companies like Toyota Kirloskar, Maruti Suzuki, Mercedes, etc. recruit you if you have good knowledge on the subject. Whereas mechanical jobs are quite vast and work in most of the industries in the field of production, design and most automobile companies do recruit mechanicals engineers. Mechanical engineering are widely accepted and paid better stipends and Salary comparatively by Aon Hewitt 2017 research, and hence Mechanical should be most preferred.

Automobile engineering is a sub branch of mechanical engineering, though it is studied as main branch in some engineering colleges. Difference according to study: In mechanical engineering, you will learn every mechanical object or machines out there in the world. You will have more generalized subjects like theory of machines, dynamics and kinetics of machines. You will have machine oriented problems. While in Automobile engineering you will learn Automobile IC engines, Vehicle Dynamics, Vehicle kinematics, etc. Difference according to career opportunities: You can get your job more easily with degree of Mechanical engineer than Automobile engineer. Truth being that every firm prefers mechanical Er. Over Automobile Engineer Even some automobile companies prefer Mechanical Engineer. Mechanical Engineers, after finishing this course, students can find jobs with the private or government sector. It is also possible for students to get jobs as Lecturers in colleges. Students of mechanical engineering have an initial salary of around Rs 15,000 - Rs 20,000 a month. With more experience in the field, aspirants can earn as much as Rs 25,000 - Rs 40,000. Automobile Engineers, after finishing this course, students can find jobs with service stations, the defense services or in automobile manufacturing firms. It is also possible for students to find jobs as a scientist or researcher. Students of automobile engineering will have an initial salary of Rs.10, 000 to Rs.15, 000 a month. Professionals of this field will have a monthly salary of approximately Rs. 40,000. Students who have finished their graduation from NIT, the IIT or BITS will get a high salary package.
