If you are talking about which branch have a better scope mechanical engineering or civil engineering, the first thing I want to tell you that each branch has its own significance and its own value, so don't compare that civil is better or mechanical is better, both are equally good and both are the core branches of engineering, so don't be confused. As mechanical engineering is the mother of all engineering branches so it is all about the designing and production of machines.

Mechanical engineering is the discipline that applies the principles of engineering, physics, and materials science for the design, analysis, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems. It is the branch of engineering that involves the design, production, and operation of machinery. It is one of the oldest and broadest of the engineering disciplines. Mechanical engineers are employed in operations and maintenance roles in Manufacturing and Services industry. Some of the largest areas of employment of mechanical engineers are in productions, machine tools, railway engineering, aerospace, the automobile industry, power plants, armed forces and paramilitary forces. Mechanical engineers can easily move to Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Automobile engineering after graduation beside core mechanical specialization. Every manufacturing industry and services company require mechanical engineers. Therefore, demand for mechanical engineering graduates never diminishes. It is an evergreen branch with no cyclic trend in the job market. Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including works like roads, bridges, canals, dams, and buildings. Civil engineers design, build, supervise, operate, and maintain construction projects and systems in the public and private sector, including roads, buildings, airports, tunnels, dams, bridges, and systems for water supply and sewage treatment. Many civil engineers work in design, construction, research, and education. Civil Engineering is an age old profession and with Government of India's focus on infrastructure scope and opportunities for the civil engineer will be very high for next few years. Civil Engineers requirement depends on Government intervention. Also, most of the jobs are field oriented. In view of above, it is recommended that you may opt for Mechanical Engineering over Civil Engineering.

I’ve done Mechatronics with the foundations being Mechanical Engineering. After that, I’ve studied a lot of electronics. The fundamentals of Mechanical and Civil Engineering are the EXACT SAME. Its statics, strength of materials, structural engineering. The forces, torques and moments are acting on a body, in Mechanical Engineering, it’s usually a moving body (studying dynamics, vibrations, etc.) in Civil Engineering it’s a static object such as tunnels, bridges buildings. From a salary, point of view it’s roughly the same provided you’re good in your profession. I know people who didn’t pay attention at university, didn’t do the courses properly and they’re drifting between jobs now. And now, the most important bit- I think you should seriously ask yourself some questions about what you want to do. Engineering is one of the few professions for which the driving motivation of getting into shouldn’t be financial, but the eagerness to solve problems and to add a little good to the world. Because it’s hard, it’s really hard, and if you don’t have the inner drive to solve problems that sometimes you don’t make any progress on for an entire day (or more), having no clue what’s wrong, it really tests the nerves. And I believe if your drive is the salary only, you’ll quit sooner or later. But, if you’re really dedicated, solving these painstaking problems after all the struggle, it really pays off.

Both branches are good but if you speak of scope as such mechanical beats civil by a long shot. Mechanical is (was) called the mother of engineering for a reason. It provides a variety of options both in learning and jobs as well. And speaking of jobs and placements Civil is not in such a good shape. Open any college's placement site - you will see that civil will have one of the least placements and generally lesser than mechanical (this is true even for NITs and IITs with a exception of a few). Even packages offered are better in mechanical than civil by a small margin. To give an idea of what mechanical has to offer these are the sub branches in which you CA get a job can talk about mechanical not sure about civil. Mechanical engineering opens up a vast ocean of opportunities to anyone who pursues it. In mechanical there are many sub branches which have many jobs to offer: Aerospace Mechatronics Marine Metallurgy Production/Industrial Automobile But if you have a passion for civil then go for it. If you are good at what you do you would surely get a good job and good placements. But if you are joining for jobs and scope go for mechanical.
