Srkian, , these days emphasis is more on CSE as compared to ECE. Though job opportunities available are alike. Salary package is more for CSE students. Now the most important thing is the university/ college that you choose for your degree. These days we have many good government as well as private universities like IITs, IITTs, NITs, LPU, SRM, etc offering admissions in different engineering branches. Some of them offer admission just on the basis of tests like JEE and some offer you admission on basis of JEE or their own test or direct admission too on the basis of your marks in previous qualifying exam. So, you can check the websites of these universities to know the course and fee details.

For freshers, I feel any company is best to start with. As a fresher, students should stick to their 1st company for a minimum of 4-5 years. However, I also wish to inform you that many colleges start their placement with product, consulting and core companies followed by IT companies. The packages offered by product companies/consulting companies are more as compare to other IT service companies. Hence, students need to choose the companies wisely.

Hands down CSE. CSE is a field which is growing by leaps and bounds every year and will keep the pace. The demand for graduates from CSE/IT departments is pretty big. The demand is so high that many students from other branches also get IT roles. The average packages for IITs and top NITs for CSE are above 10 LPA. Even CSE has some of the best companies to work for like Amazon and Google where the employees are given a lot of facilities and incentives. But if you are interested in ECE it is also a pretty good branch. It also has decent placements and packages. The irony is many ECE students join IT jobs in the end. So, if you are genuinely interested in ECE, you can go for that too. However, if you are aiming for core jobs you have to work hard be in top 5 of the class in general along with good extracurriculars. I would say that follow your passion and join whichever branch you like. If you are good at what you are supposed to do then surely you will get good job and package.
