When mechanical branch is concerned, both the colleges will be equally great. The thing is, the core companies are not that big and do not provide huge packages like the non-core do. But a lot of companies do visit the campus of both universities (core companies) and there's a lot of chance that if you work hard, you can get a dream offer.

Both are good, but still being an engineer, I'll suggest you to choose VIT over MIT, because VIT is very reputed and placement is also good.

The first thing you should keep in mind while choosing between VIT and MIT should be which campus you are getting. If it is the main campus, i.e. Vellore and Manipal then you can go for either of the two as there isn't much difference between both in terms of placement, campus life and stuff. But if you are getting any other campus other than the main campus in MIT i.e. if you are getting either Jaipur or Sikkim, I would recommend you to prefer VIT even if it is Chennai campus, because of the placement record of the previous years for both the colleges. Coming to the campus life, the life here in VIT, Chennai is more like a routine, the campus is so small that you can cover it in a maximum of 15-20 mins. So placement wise go for VIT if not getting Manipal main campus. The course quality is almost same in both the colleges but you have better opportunities in MIT (only if you get the main campus) as the administration is way more cooperative.
