'Internship' from the perspective of engineering colleges in India primarily is aimed at giving an industry exposure, and involves people taking up trainee positions in companies which deal with the sub-branch of their choice. However, people interested in research usually engage in research projects at IIT's/IISc or universities in the US/Canada/Europe/Australia. By doing this you will know yourself more clearly, where you stand w.r.t the industrial needs and what changes you need in yourself. You will learn to work under mentors/seniors/managers. It will develop your tolerance power, patience, group work abilities, etc. It will be a whole new experience. Pursuing training course now will not only enhance your knowledge but will also point out the areas where you need to improve followed by giving you experience of real world implementation of the theoretical concepts. It will also help you to get internship opportunity in the future since the companies prefer candidates who have done something extra apart from the mainstream study.

Recent survey of senior executives in Indian corporate world has indicated that majority of fresh engineering graduates are not employable because the most of Engineering syllabus is theoretical and students have limited practical exposure. Therefore, in order to bridge gap between industry expectation and teaching, engineering colleges are encouraging students to take internship with industry to get an exposure on industrial environment. Some Engineering colleges have very elaborate internship program. BITS Pilani provides six month practice school to all engineering student in final year under industrial technology organizations and enterprises. Most of the engineering colleges encourages students to seek internship with personal reference. Internship helps students as follows: (a) Exposure to real technology organisation and make then understand what is expected from them in field. (b) Provides experience of org process and methodologies. (c) Helps to develop skills and competencies (d) Enhances perspective (e) Opportunity to assess your own competence & area of interests and decide on future career growth plan (f) Create a network of contacts (g) Org may provide a recommendation letter which may help to build and strengthen CV (h) Opportunity of job offer from org where student does internship (I) Develops network (j) Helps to have better grades as assessment of internship is liberal (k) Helps in placement.

If my understanding is right, then 6-weeks of industrial training is the mandatory part of engineering curriculum irrespective of the Institute. The objective of industrial training is to provide an exposure to industrial/professional working environment which happens to be significantly different from the college/campus environment and hence in a way prepares students for the upcoming professional life. In addition, to the above, it also helps through following: 1. Provide an exposure to what companies are likely to look for during the campus recruitment time. 2. Companies prefer known devil as compared to the unknown devil during recruitment. Lucky enough to do the internship with your preferred company, then you are in an advantageous position with respect to others when it recruitment with the company, as you are now familiar with the working environment and culture of the company. 3. In an exceptional scenario, it also helps to change the direction of your career. For example, in my own case, did traditional electrical engineering but going through an internship with a computer company helped me to progress my career in computers, some 30-years back when computers were not really popular.

Yes, recently internship in engineering colleges has been made compulsory (minimum three internships). There are lots of benefits of doing internship such as: 1) GAIN WORK EXPERIENCE: - By doing an internship, individual works on the live project and through this work experience can be a gain. 2) GAIN KNOWLEDGE: - Theoretical knowledge can be applied in the field of practice with the help of internship. 3) DISCOVER YOUR INTEREST: - At the time of being an intern you can know about various work fields and through it, you can discover your interest. 4) DOORWAYS TO OPPORTUNITIES: - Through an internship, a potential intern gets an opportunity to develop himself that makes a doorway to his/her opportunities. 5) EARN WHILE YOU LEARN: - As it has already mentioned, an internship may be paid or unpaid so if an internship is paid you can earn and manage your pocket money while learning. And of course, it will help you during your placement as you would have gained some experience while doing an internship. In my point of view do as more internship as you can, nowadays even virtual internship facilities are also available. All the best! Please feel free to revert back.
