What are the features of northern plains

(i)\xa0The northern\xa0plains have been formed from the alluvium deposited by the mountain rivers.(ii)\xa0They are located\xa0between the Himalayan rivers in the north and the Peninsular Plateau in the\xa0south.(iii) They turned the soil on the surfaced land fertile for growing a rich harvest of variety of crops. This led to the development of the Indus Valley Civilization.(iv) They are made up of\xa0deposits of alluvium and cover an area of 7 lakh\xa0sq. km.(v) They are densely\xa0populated physiographic division\xa0of India and are believed\xa0to be highly productive in terms of agriculture.(vi) The North\xa0Indian plains have the Indus river system in the west and the\xa0Ganga Brahmaputra\xa0river system\xa0in the East.(vii)\xa0The first include Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas\xa0and Satluj. The Indus flows into the Arabian Sea.\xa0The second includes Ganga-Brahamaputra which combines with Meghna at the point when it drains\xa0into the Bay of Bengal. They form the\xa0world\'s largest and fastest growing\xa0delta. On\xa0the basis of\xa0difference of relief, they are divided into four parts-Bhabar, Terai, Bhangar and\xa0Khadar.(viii) The northern plain is divided into three sections -\xa0Punjab plain, Ganga plain and Brahmaputra\xa0plain. The Ganga plain has diverse relief features. It has four belts.(a) Bhabar is a belt of\xa0pebbles extending from 8-16\xa0km in width in which\xa0stream disappears.(b) Terai is a wet, swampy,\xa0marshy region with thick forests\xa0and wild life.(c) Bhangar is a terrace-like feature made of old alluvium. It contains\xa0calcareous deposits called Kankar.(d) Khadar\xa0is the flood plain which renewed\xa0everywhere and is very fertile.
