Short for synchronous optical network, SONET is an ANSI STANDARD for connecting fiber-optic networks. The SONET standard is a physical network layer. It is used to carry a large amount of data over long distances in a broad range of high-level network protocols at the rate of 2.488 Gbps. Synchronous denotes the network's reliance on a clock to make sure all hosts run at the same rate to reduce network collisions and to CREATE a more effective network.
NoteOutside the United States, SONET is also REFERRED to as synchronous digital hierarchy or SDH.
