Jquery tag selection

Probably pretty simple, but I seem to miss the trick the somewhere. Here is my question -

 id=main-content> 
   id="syllabus">
   id="subjects">

How do I select the tags inside div tag using jquery?

To do something like -

   $("#main-content").[something].("#syllabus").append("<option>Mathsoption>")
