ONE or more of the following characteristics over a long period of time and to a marked degree that ADVERSELY affects a child's educational performance:An inability to build or maintain satisfactory interpersonal relationships with peers and teachers.A tendency to develop physical symptoms or FEARS associated with personal or school problems.Inappropriate types of behavior under normal circumstances, such as aggression or self-injurious behaviorHyperactivity (short attention span, impulsiveness)Withdrawal or a general pervasive mood of unhappiness or depression (failure to initiate interaction with others, retreat from exchanges or SOCIAL interaction, excessive fear or anxiety)Development of physical symptoms or fears associated with personal or school problemsImmaturity (inappropriate crying, temper tantrums, poor coping skills)Learning difficulties that cannot be explained by intellectual, sensory, or health factors (academically performing below grade level).Note: Inappropriate crying is an example of emotional disturbance, HOWEVER Social withdrawal is an example of a severe emotional disturbance.
