Meaning

From Al-Habsh (also written Habash/Habesh/Habsh), etc., Habshi means from Habsh. The ancient name for the Ethiopuan empire was Al-Habsh (sometimes spelled Abyssinia). Similarly to how Angrez (meaning English) came to be used to refer to all white Europeans and Firang/Firangi (meaning Frank or from France) to refer to all white Africans, Habshi came to be used to refer to all black people. Those in northern Ethiopia and Eritrea are still known as Habesha. Stop using this term abusively, and call out those who do so. When used abusively, it shows a person is making fun of their own culture and is thus racist.

Example

Traditional Habesha attire consists of a white cotton robe known as shama and a head knot known as netela.

Sentence

Those from Ethiopia and Eritrea are often referred to as Habesha. Culturally, the Habesha have a long and glorious history, and their own language, rituals, and traditions are trademarks of their heritage.
