The law of constant proportions states that a chemical compound is always formed of the same elements combined together in the same ratio by weight. For illustration consider the following example: carbon dioxide (CO2) may be obtained by burning carbon in oxygen, or by treating calcium carbonate with dilute HCl or by any other method, it is always formed of same elements, carbon and oxygen. These two elements (carbon and oxygen) are always found combined together in carbon dioxide in the same ratio by weight.
