Law of Constant Composition or Definite Proportions state: "A chemical compound is always found to be made up of the same elements combined together in the same fixed proportion by weight."

Examples,

(i) CO2 may prepare in the laboratory as follows:

CaCO3 \(\overset{Heat}{\rightarrow}\) CaO + CO2 ↑

(ii) C + O2 \(\overset{Heat}{\rightarrow}\) CO2 ↑

(iii) CaCO3 + 2HCl → CaCl2 + CO2 ↑ + H2O

(iv) 2NaHCO3 \(\overset{Heat}{\rightarrow}\) Na2CO3 + CO2 ↑ + H2O

In all the above examples, CO2 is made up of the same elements, i.e., carbon (C) and oxygen (O) combined together in the same fixed proportion by weight 12.30 or 3:8.
