CURRENTLY at risk.Rain Forests:Rainforests are the world's most oldest LIVING ecosystems. An ecosystem is not just the plants, but also the birds, mammals, reptiles, fish, amphibians, bacteria and even the non-living elements like soil, water and air.Rainforests produce, STORE, and filter water, protecting against soil erosion, floods and drought.Deforestation is endangering rainforests worldwide, driven by logging, mining, agriculture, and ranching. Before humans started destroying the rainforests, they covered 15% of the Earth's land area, today, they cover only 6%.Rainforests influence the carbon cycle (green plants TAKE up carbon dioxide for photosynthesis, a process during which oxygen is released into the air) and also have a profound effect on rainfall. When trees are cut down in a forest, it eliminates or decreases the amount of transpiration, which means that the amount of rainfall in that area will decrease.Hence, it can be concluded that the long term effect of cutting down of trees in large areas of rain forests is decreased rainfall in those areas.
