I looked at other questions but they don't address my issue.

I'm running Ubuntu 17.10.1 server in Oracle VirtualBox v.5.2.4. Installation went fine. Afterwards, I ran the following commands:

  • sudo apt-get update && apt-get upgrade - no issues
  • sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop -y - again no apparent issues
  • sudo startx - started x and I was able to start familiarizing myself with the desktop; I then logged out.

Now, when I log in, I get the KDE prompt for my password. After entering it, I get a black screen with the X cursor but nothing else.

I'm not using Ubuntu Server as an actual server but as a learning aid. It's been a few weeks and now I want to learn the desktop.

Is there a way I can break out of the KDE Desktop? Or is there something I can do to restore the desktop?

In advance, I appreciate your help!
