ITBP: Indo-Tibetan Border Police

The full form of ITBP is Indo-Tibetan Border Police. It is one of the seven Central Armed Police Forces of India. Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) was raised on October 24, 1962 for reorganizing the frontier intelligence and security set up along the Indo-Tibetan border. The deployment of ITBP was intended to guard India’s border with Tibet. The first chief of the ITBP was the designated Inspector General, Balbir Singh, formerly a police officer belonging to the Intelligence Bureau (IB). S S Deswal is the current (as of July, 2021) Director General of ITBP.

Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) is trained in Civil Medical Camp, Disaster Management, Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Disasters. Two battalions of ITBP are deployed in the National Disaster Response Force. The motto of ITBP is Shaurya, Dridata, Karm Nishtha that translates to Valor, Determination and Devotion to duty in English.

Eligibility Criteria for ITBP Constable
  • Age Limit : 18 to 25 years 05 years to SC/ST and 03 years to OBC (NCL)
  • Height : 162.5 cms
  • Chest : 77-82 cms
  • Education Qualification : Matriculation or 10th class pass from a recognized Board or Institution.

ITBP has undergone a massive expansion plan to provide much needed relief to its troops who remain deployed in the tough high altitude terrain for most part of their service. The ITBP, which started with 4 Battalions, since its reorganization in 1978 has expanded to a force of 60 Battalions with 15 Sectors and a sanctioned strength of 89,432 along 89 Frontiers. ITBP is the only Central Armed Police Force in India, which has combatised stress counsellors in its Field units, Formations Including the Ranks – Deputy Commandants ESC, Assistant Commandant-ESC, Inspector-ESC, Sub Inspector-ESC and Head Constable-ESC.
