एक आधुनिक पाश्चातात्य मत या सिद्धान्त, जिसमें नैतिक, सांस्कृतिक आदि गुणों या विशेषताओं का ध्यान छोड़कर प्रत्येक बात या वस्तु का अर्थ, महत्त्व या मान इस दृष्टि से आँका जाता है कि मानव समाज के कल्याण के लिए उसका कितना, कैसा और क्या उपयोग है अथवा हो सकता है:"मिल और बेंथम उपयोगितावाद के प्रणेता माने जाते हैं"

1.The same utilitarian pattern holds in modern times. यही उपयोगितावाद की परिपाटी आधुनिक समय में भी जारी रही. तुर्की साम्राज्य द्वारा 19वीं शताब्दी में जेरूसलम की उपेक्षा ने फ्रांसीसी उपन्यासकार गुस्ताव फ्लावर्ट को ये बातें कहने पर विवश किया, “सर्वत्र भग्नावशेष और कब्रगाहों के अवशेष हैं-तीन धर्मों का पवित्र शहर विनाश और उपेक्षा से सड़ रहा है ”. 1917 में ब्रिटिश साम्राज्य द्वारा इसे विजित करने पर फिलीस्तीनी अरबवासियों ने इसे साम्राज्यवादी नियन्त्रण के विरूद्ध मुस्लिम जनभावनायें भड़काने के लिये खोज निकाला. 1948 में जार्डन की सेनाओं द्वारा इस शहर पर नियन्त्रण कर लेने के बाद मुस्लिम रूचि पुन: क्षीण हो गई.
