We still have the time to try the approach I have suggested in my book, without facing the risk of actually trusting that Iran will not use any nuclear weapons it obtains. बातचीत का अर्थ है कि बचे मुद्दों पर ईरान से बातचीत करना न कि इसे दन्डित करने का प्रयास करना। सोयफर ने अफगानिस्तान के लिये अमेरिका के विशेष पूर्व दूत जेम्स डोबिंस को उद्धृत करते हुए कहा , “ इस समय ईरान के प्रति उन्हीं नीतियों को अपनाया जाना चाहिये जिसके चलते शीत युद्ध जीता गया , वारसा संधि से मुक्ति मिली , यूरोप को एकजुट किया गया और वह है घेराबंदी , जहाँ भी सम्भव हो चर्चा और यदि आवश्यक हो तो सीधे सामना। हमने स्टालिन के रूस से बात की। हमने माओ के चीन से बात की। दोनों ही मामलों में परस्पर खुलने से उनकी व्यवस्था बदल गई न कि हमारी। यह समय है कि जब ईरान से बिना शर्त और व्यापक रूप से बात की जाये” । एक और पूर्व अमेरिकी कूटनयिक चेस्टर ए क्रोकर का मानना है कि, “ सोयफर कूटनीति को ऐसे इंजिन के रूप में देखते हैं जो कि कच्ची ऊर्जा और वास्तविक शक्ति को अर्थपूर्ण राजनीतिक परिणाम में बदल देती है”
