The full form of BIS is Bureau of Indian Standards. BIS came into existence on 1 April 1987 by an act of parliament dated 26 November 1986. It is the successor of the Indian Standard Institution (ISI). It is the national Standards Body of India engaged in the preparation and implementation of standards, operation of certification schemes, organization and management of testing laboratories, creating consumer awareness and maintaining a close relationship with international standards bodies. If any customer reports about the degraded quality of any certified product at Grievance Cell, BIS HQs, BIS gives redressal to the customer.

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is headquartered in New Delhi and has five regional offices that are located at Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi, Chandigarh and has 20 branch offices. As of 2020, Pramod Kumar Tiwari, IAS is the Director-General of BIS. It works under the aegis of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution of India. As a corporate body, it has 25 members drawn from Central or State Governments, industry, scientific and research institutions, and consumer organizations. BIS is a founder member of the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO). It represents India in ISO, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the World Standards Service Network (WSSN).
