When I start up Windows XP, I get theis message:
The C:\WINDOWS\system32\vnmdke\csrss.exe application cannot be run in Win32 mode.
When I clikc OK, it says:
Could not load or run 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\vnmdke\csrss.exe' specified in the registry. Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference to it in the registry.
I looked for the folder, vnmdke, and could not find it. I set my folders to show hidden files, and it was nowhere to be seen. Any ideas?Insert your XP CD into the CD drive.
From the Start Menu select Run and type command and hit enter.
At the command prompt type sfc /scannow ...just as it is typed here and hit Enter.
Be patient let it do it's job.
patio. 8-)Thanks, patio. I did what you suggested. The scan ran but didn't report anything wrong. The problem persists.Have you recently installed any new programs on that machine ? ? Like a new game perhaps ? ?

Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference to it in the registry.
A safe way to do this is with Hijackthis.I ran HijackThis. It told me to save a log and show it to someone who knows what the heck they're doing. These lines were in the log:
F3 - REG:win.ini: load=C:\WINDOWS\system32\vnmdke\csrss.exe
F3 - REG:win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\system32\vnmdke\csrss.exe
Anyone have a clue what that means?Without posting your complete logfile it would be guesswork at best...
Even my crystal ball does not tell me which Application wrote that to your win.ini file.
patio. 8-)Sorry about that, patio. Here's the complete log:

Ok
Total frustration. vnmdke does not show up in the MS Knowledge Base articles at all...
However csrss is a valid XP process but that still doesn't explain what program or task is calling that process.
Do me a favor browse to your win.ini file...it will be at the end of your Windows folder.
Right clik it and choose "Open With" and select Notepad cut and paste a copy and post it here.
patio. 8-)
Do not edit it yet at this time.Re-run
HJT,
TICK both the entries and push the fixit button.Thanx Fed...
I wasn't aware Hijack this made it that easy.
Nice assist.
patio. 8-)Thanks, Fed. That did it. I made sure I had the csrss.exe in my system32 folder, then let HiJack This do its thing. Problem solved. Whew! Thanks to you too, Patio.I'll take credit for spinnin my wheels...
Fed got the job done !
