Ok....Where to begin (in short)...No problems, until I uninstalled my Norton 2005 and tried to install 2006. The first problem came in a pop-up while installing..."This file does not have a program assciated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Option Control panel." SO I shut her down and rebooted. Now, Nothing except my internet connection works. No Icon Shortcuts on my desktop (in fact there are no icons there now, just a box)I have noticed anything javascript cannot be opened as well. I only know basic computer stuff but these are some of the THINGS I have noticed. I tried to run the Virus Scan directly from Symantec but it is telling me my ACtiveX control is either not enabled or not working. I have absolutely no idea what to do know. I have XP,
Thanks in advance.you mean to say you shut the computer down while it was installing, or what? No, not while installing. Only after that error message came up and when the computer stoppped doing anything for a while. Can you get to system restore to at least get back to where you were? Sometimes the Norton virus is hard to get rid of. See Symantec's website for specific instructions. Here is where my lack of computer knowledge will get me! What systerm restore exactly? I tried starting in safe mode to go to Last Good Configuration but that didn't work. Or do you mean System restore through Symantec?Hit the start button, then select run. Type in msconfig. Then select Launch system restore. It's a button near the bottom.
Leave the defaults and then click next. Select a restore point, click next. You'll asked to confirm the DATE, click next if you're sure you've selected the right one. Your computer will now reboot, do a bit of work and your problem should now be solved, if not try another date prior to this. Good luck.
I wish I could! I literally can not click on anything, it either does nothing. Or in the case of going to run and trying to go to something specific I get the same error message as in my first post...."This file does not have a program assciated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Option Control panel."
Any other ideas? Was your modem connected to the internet when you uninstalled your anti-virus program and whilst installing the new one?
This this on-line scanner http://housecall.trendmicro.com
Looking at this forum many people have stopped using Norton and prefer to use AVG Free HOME Edition.
[ch1046]My computer was on (obviously) but was not connected to the internet at the time of uninstall/install of Norton.I will try the Housecall suggestion. Something is defintiely wrong with my Java script though. I get error messages that it is not enabled or active yet when I go to the browser options my java is defintely enabled. What gives? It might be a Trojan infection. You can use the on-line scan and also install Spybot SD, Adaware SE and Spywareblaster. Update these programs and run scans to check your system is clear of other infections.
Norton is very temperamental. Maybe 2006 is not fully compatible. Why did you change from 2005?
It is just a marketing ploy to make you spend more money than you need to spend.
[ch1046]I updated because it was free (after rebate) and I didn't want to pay to update my subscription for 2005. I will run the scans suggested and see.....keeping my FINGERS crossed.I downloaded the AVG Free but cannot get it to open. What do I do next? The Norton products are an absolute pig to REMOVE unless you use the provided removal tools such as SymNRT. Even then, success is not guaranteed.
At this stage in the game, unless my systems knowledge was pretty in depth, I would be inclined to give up and opt for a fresh reinstall of the OS and leave Mr Nortons rubbish where it belongs - In the bin!
For AV, I would recommend Kaspersky and for a firewall Kerio 215 is very good.Try this .exe fix - http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/xp_exe_fix.zip
