I wish to buy a Smartphone/iPhone for my wife - our TomTom in the car is getting old. Which is cheaper and more advisable? A Smartphone/iPhone with GPS (throw away TomTom), or Smartphone/iPhone without GPS (buy a new TomTom)?
Thanks for any advice.Pretty much any decent smartphone will come with GPS nowadays so it's not LIKE you have to pay loads more to get a smartphone with it. I would definitely go down the route of getting a single smartphone to use as GPS. The only thing to bear in mind is that smartphones tend to need an internet connection to use GPS to get maps and directions, therefore whatever smartphone you buy you would need to make sure you have some sort of mobile DATA on your plan.It depends on what app you use for gps navigation as to whether an internet connection is needed or not. For instance, on Android phones, many people use Google Maps to navigate with but that app requires a data connection because it constantly downloads map data as you drive along. However, you could get an app like CoPilot Live which stores it's map data locally on the phone and does NOT need a data connection while navigating. The drawback is that the app needs a Gig or more of your phone's storage space to store it's maps. Also, CoPilot costs around $10 to buy whereas Google Maps is free.
I don't now what gps navigation apps come with an iPhone but CoPilot is available on that platform as well.Another point. GPS might reefer to a s pacific technology.

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a space-based satellite navigation system that provides location and time information in all weather conditions, anywhere on or near the Earth where there is an unobstructed line of sight to four or more GPS satellites.GPS depends on low orbit satellites. These are visible anywhere on the planet.
