y days SUNDIAL was used to konw the time the machenism used was that it showed time ACCORDING to the POSITION of the sun,when the sunlight hitted the bended pole then it formed a shadow on the flat DISK which consisted of info. of time written on it.For short intervals a sand clock was used hope it helps thanks
