TT: Tetanus Toxoid

The full form of TT is Tetanus Toxoid. It is also called as Tetanus vaccine. Tetanus Toxoid (TT) is a vaccine used to provide protection (immunity) against tetanus (lockjaw). Tetanus is a serious illness of the nervous system caused by bacteria called Clostridium tetani. The bacteria can enter the body through cut, wound, bite, burn, etc. They affect the nervous system and can result in serious complications if left untreated. The common symptoms of this disease include convulsions, lockjaw, muscle spasms, stiffness and problem swallowing.

TT vaccine is very safe, including during pregnancy and in those with HIV/AIDS. Redness and pain at the site of injection occur in between 25% and 85% of people. Fever, feeling tired, and minor muscle pain occurs in less than 10% of people. Severe allergic reactions occur in less than one in 100,000 people. The vaccine was developed in the 1920s and became a success when used in World War II to protect the US military from tetanus. Tetanus vaccination is recommended for all infants, children and adults. TT vaccine is very effective following vaccination, 95% of people are protected from diphtheria, 80% to 85% from pertussis, and 100% from tetanus.
