I can talk about mechanical engineering as I am not sure about the civil branch. Mechanical engineering opens up a vast ocean of opportunities to anyone who opts for it. In mechanical, there are many sub branches which have many jobs to offer: Aerospace Mechatronics Marine Metallurgy Production/Industrial Automobile Manufacturing Mechanical engineers can work in these fields also: Biomedical Operation Transport Shipping Nanotechnology The main sub fields include: Thermofluids Solid mechanics Systems dynamics (Dynamics and controls) Heat transfer Energy systems Biomechanics Product design Material science Nanotechnology Alternative energy Computational fluid dynamics Manufacturing Robotics/Mechatronics Thermal Engineering-Gas turbine technology Structural Integrity-Fracture mechanics, Finite Element Analysis, etc. Fluid Power and turbomachinery Combustion and engines So, as you can see that options are in vast number, so are the jobs if you maintain a decent CGPA and have good fundamental knowledge.
