AI and Machine learning are quite the different things in some aspects.
Technically speaking Machine learning is the current application of the AI.
AI is anything that is performed by machine ,that makes it smart , where as machine learning is something that the access to data is given to the machine , so that it can learn based on the algorithm it is implemented.

###Early Days ######

Artificial Intelligences :

Devices designed to act intelligently – are often classified into one of two fundamental groups – applied or general. Applied AI is far more common – systems designed to intelligently trade stocks and shares, or manoeuvre an autonomous vehicle would fall into this category.

Machine Learning :

As technology, and, importantly, our understanding of how our minds work, has progressed, our concept of what constitutes AI has changed. Rather than increasingly complex calculations, work in the field of AI concentrated on mimicking human decision making processes and carrying out tasks in ever more human ways.

Artificial intelligence (AI, also machine intelligence, MI) is intelligence displayed by machines, in contrast with the natural intelligence (NI) displayed by humans and other animals. In computer science AI research is defined as the study of "intelligent agents": any device that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of success at some goalColloquially, the term "artificial intelligence" is applied when a machine mimics "cognitive" functions that humans associate with other human minds, such as "learning" and "problem solving".

Machine learning is a field of computer science that gives computers the ability to learn without being explicitly programmed. Machine learning is closely related to (and often overlaps with) computational statistics, which also focuses on prediction-making through the use of computersIt has strong ties to mathematical optimization, which delivers methods, theory and application domains to the field. Machine learning is sometimes conflated with data mining, where the latter subfield focuses more on exploratory data analysis and is known as unsupervised learning.Machine learning can also be unsupervised and be used to learn and establish baseline behavioral profiles for various entities and then used to find meaningful anomalies.

These are the two words which is creating lot of buzz in the world. Not even small companies but the big gaints also working on it. As per my understanding both the words are co-related.

In layman language - In Artificial intellegence, the certain task can be perform smarter once the working machine learn how to perform the desired task efficientaly.

In technical terms - Artificial Intellegence is the desired output of the algorithm burned or compliled in the machine as per the inputs.

As per my understanding, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are two hot words right now, which often seem to be used interchangeably.

But Actually, they are not quite the same thing & can sometimes lead to some confusion based on the prospects they have used. Both these terms are used very frequently when discussing Big Data, analytics etc.

IN SHORT -

AI (Artificial Intelligence) is the broader concept of machines being able to carry out tasks in a way that we would consider it “smart”.

Whereas,

ML (Machine Learning) is an application of AI based around the idea in which we should be able to give machines access to data and let them learn for themselves.
