The greatest breakthrough ever, would be Faster Than Light Travel, or FTL for short.

And of course by all accounts of rational physicists, it is impossible to break the Law of Special Relativity. Even approaching the speed of light will present problems where energy is converted into mass, and no longer available to propel a spacecraft any faster than a certain limit.

And just like Einstein proved Newton wrong, so too must the younger generation of scientists prove to the old stodgy Curmudgeons of Cosmology that they too may also be wrong.

The goal of creating a real, stable nuclear fusion device capable of generating massive amounts of energy has been pursued by physicists for decades, starting in the early 1950s. Whilst we have subsequently created working nuclear fusion reactors, the reaction is often short-lived and requires more energy to establish than the device can actually produce - an energy deficit.
